When you're on Vacation...

What will you do with your Guinea Pig? This is a very common topic when you are planning to go on Vacation. Will you bring your Cavy along? Will somebody pig-sit?

Traveling with your Guinea Pig can stress them out and give them shock. Personally, I would not bother traveling with my Guinea Pigs. Just imagine, a whole plane ride or car ride, for hours, in a little carrier, hearing commotion around you. Would you like that?

For a short vacation, such as 3- 5 days,  I recommend getting a pet-sitter to check on them twice a day and giving them care. It's easier than packing and cramming in all their stuff. We have neighbors who watch my girls while I'm away. We give them instructions, just in case. They always help out. The instructions should somewhat look like this-

Every Day

*Give the Guinea Pigs (Amount of Food) in their bowls.
*Give them fresh water and hay.
*Let them run around a bit, and just sit and hold them.
*(Anything else you do daily)

Every Couple of Days

*Give them a treat, like a carrot or an apple. (My piggies favorite)
*Spot Clean their cage (You do not want to stress out the sitter, either)

Things to Consider while leaving your Guinea Pig with a sitter/at home

*You have to have lots of food ready. Do not let your cavy starve.
*Have a trustworthy sitter. You don't want anything to happen to your babies, right?
*Keep things simple. Don't pressure the sitter!
*Label Stuff. It will help the sitter get used to things quicker.
*Keep the rooms at a good Temperature. Make sure your Guinea Pigs are comfortable!
*Consider your bedding. I don't think sitters would like to touch pee-soaked fleece. try the original bedding, so they do not have to spot clean often.
*Contact Info and Emergency Info. I case of emergency, leave your vet's number, and any other people who know your Guinea Pigs.

I hope that gave you an idea of things. They will get somewhat bored, but at least the know they are in a safe spot.

For longer vacations, you have options. Take along your pet. Or have your piggies sleepover at a Pet-Sitters home. If the place is not far away, and you are staying in a private house, you can bring your Cavies along. Make them feel at home. But I live far from the beach, for example, 10 hours away. My options go to the pet-sitter. If you need to find a pet-sitter by you, and who are willing enough to care for your pigs, you can try Guinea Pig Forums. Personally, I would go over before hand, and make sure I trust them. Either that, like I said before, get a friend who is willing to do it.

And if you are the kind of person who wants to bring your pigs on Vacation, read this.

Things to Consider while vacationing with your Cavy

*Have a nice travel cage. Don't let your Guinea pigs feel like they are trapped or stuck in a tiny, cold place. I suggest a roomy, cozy carrier.
*Make sure your Cavies do not overheat. In a beach house, the temperature can go up. Piggies can get heat stroke easily.
*Once you arrive, get them situated. vacation may be tempting, with the ocean and all. But remember your duties.
*Can your Guinea Pigs travel? Will they get flighty and scared? What type of Cavy are they?

I hope this helped a bit. If you still need more information, (This is from my point of view) talk about it to your friends who own Guinea Pigs and other people with experience on the subject.
